Amid growing calls for a sovereign European tech stack, Swedish startup Evroc has raised €50.6 million ($55 million) in Series A funding. The company aims to create a “secure, sovereign, and sustainable hyperscale cloud” that will play a pivotal role in shaping the digital future of Europe. With Europe seeking alternatives to reliance on U.S.-based tech firms, Evroc’s mission to develop a sovereign tech ecosystem comes at a crucial time.
A Vision for European Digital Sovereignty
Evroc’s goal is clear: build a hyperscale cloud infrastructure in Europe that serves as a homegrown alternative to the likes of AWS, Microsoft, and Google Cloud. This initiative is driven by the broader European digital sovereignty movement, which advocates for reducing the continent’s dependence on foreign-owned digital infrastructure. Recent calls from European tech industries are pushing lawmakers for radical action, urging the creation of local alternatives in cloud services, AI models, and even apps.
The company, which launched in 2023, has ambitious plans to establish data centers and cloud services across the region. By 2028, Evroc aims to have eight data centers in operation. Currently, it has two co-location facilities in Stockholm and Paris, with two more expected in Frankfurt by Q2 2025. Additionally, the company is developing flagship data centers in Sweden and France, set to open in 2026, which will be optimized for AI workloads.
Empowering AI with Sovereign Infrastructure
Evroc is particularly focused on serving industries requiring high levels of data sovereignty, including defense, healthcare, public sector organizations, and financial services. Its data centers will feature advanced liquid cooling systems to handle the energy demands of AI computing, where racks can consume up to 20 times more power than traditional servers. As the AI revolution intensifies, Evroc’s infrastructure is poised to support this demand while maintaining strict data security.
The company is already working with early customers in sectors that demand heightened data sovereignty. In fact, its CEO, Mattias Åström, emphasizes that the need for infrastructure control has only grown due to geopolitical tensions. Recent events like the sanctions against the International Criminal Court and Elon Musk’s control over Starlink illustrate the risks of relying on foreign tech infrastructure.
Navigating Geopolitical Tensions
Geopolitical developments further highlight the necessity for Europe’s digital independence. Åström firmly believes that Europe should control its own technological future, especially in the context of cloud services. “I simply want Europe to control its own destiny,” said Åström, highlighting the importance of infrastructure sovereignty in uncertain times.
The rise of AI and the shift from on-premises infrastructure to the cloud has only intensified the demand for secure and sovereign cloud services. Several other European startups, such as FlexAI in France, DataCrunch in Finland, and Nebius in the Netherlands, are also contributing to the continent’s cloud infrastructure growth. However, Evroc’s focus on creating a full-scale cloud environment similar to AWS, coupled with its strong AI focus, sets it apart from other players in the market.
A Growing Team Focused on Innovation
Evroc’s workforce has grown significantly, with over 60 employees now focused on software development across Sweden, France, and the UK. The company’s London office, although not initially planned, has become a crucial hub for attracting talent from major tech firms, ensuring that Evroc remains competitive in the cloud infrastructure race.
