Shield AI Secures $240M at $5.3B Valuation to Advance AI Drone Technology

BusinessShield AI Secures $240M at $5.3B Valuation to Advance AI Drone Technology

A Major Milestone for Autonomous Defense Technology

Shield AI, a San Diego-based defense technology startup, has raised $240 million in new funding, pushing its valuation to $5.3 billion. The company, known for developing AI-powered drones and military systems, is rapidly expanding its capabilities to revolutionize autonomous warfare and defense operations.

Hivemind: AI-Powered Autonomous Flight

At the core of Shield AI’s innovation is Hivemind, a cutting-edge AI software that enables fighter jets and drones to fly autonomously without GPS, communications, or human input. With this technology, military aircraft can operate in contested environments where traditional navigation and communication systems might fail.

Shield AI plans to expand Hivemind’s applications beyond military drones, marketing it to robotics and commercial aerospace companies that could benefit from advanced autonomy.

A Strong Backing from Investors

This latest funding round includes L3Harris—one of the largest defense contractors in the U.S.—and Hanwha Aerospace, a South Korean defense firm. Existing investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, also participated, reinforcing confidence in Shield AI’s potential.

A Rising Force in the Defense Tech Sector

With a valuation of $5.3 billion, Shield AI is now the second-largest defense tech startup in the U.S., following Anduril, which is currently raising funds at a $28 billion valuation.

The race for AI-driven defense solutions is heating up, as autonomous warship startup Saronic recently quadrupled its valuation to $4 billion after raising $600 million. Shield AI’s success highlights the growing demand for autonomous military technologies, which are becoming a top priority for global defense agencies.

The Future of AI in Warfare

With this funding, Shield AI is set to accelerate research, development, and commercialization of its AI-driven autonomous systems. As modern warfare increasingly relies on AI, Shield AI is well-positioned to shape the future of next-generation defense technology.
